Modernist Garden
Functional, airy and asymmetric are key characteristics of this small Modernist garden, designed to complement the bold open-plan family home, both inside and out. The rectilinear layout borrows from the architecture and defines terraces for socialising and sunbathing. A lawn was important to our clients (and their dogs), but the shape was kept simple and edged in textured clay pavers from Vande Moortel to minimise maintenance. Grey porcelain paving from Mandarin Stone compliments both interior and exterior finishes. Low maintenance planting was essential. Agapanthus, Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ and Lavandula ‘Grosso’ flourish in the sunny side, Anenome ‘Honerine Jobert’ and white Veronicastrum thrive in the shade all partnered with tough structural grasses such as Miscanthus and Hackonechloa. The planting requires little TLC but brings colour from early spring to late autumn, which was also important. A new boundary hedge of Olearia traversii ‘Compactum’ provides an attractive backdrop whilst softening the garden boundary and was chosen to hide utilitarian boundary fencing deemed unnecessary and too costly to replace.
